Council Cuts Worse than Feared

Dec 2010

The government has told the County Council that it

will need to make savings of £42.8 million

in 2011- 2012.

Budget Cuts

Cumbria County Council had predicted making

savings of £24.7million on top of the £15million it

had already identified – but now it will have to find

another £3million to make up the total cuts

next year of £42.8million.

Councillor Eddie Martin, Eddie Martin

Leader of Cumbria County Council, said:

“Savings of this magnitude(size) are something the

country has not experienced since World War Two

and will require radical reform(a big change) of what

we do and how we do it. We’re well underway with

our plans to deliver a fundamental

re-engineering(reorganisation) of the way the Council operates.

I would urge everyone to get involved in our ongoing consultation on proposed

savings and the Council’s priorities as we will need to make some difficult decisions

between now and when we deliver a budget in February.”

“I believe that looking after the vulnerable in our

Vulnerable Peoplecommunities, both children and adults, must be our

number one priority – but there are many different

ways of doing this. I would welcome the views of

the public and I would encourage them to get

involved.”
