My name is Andrew Matthews and I live with my mother and brother, we all live
together overlooking the harbour in Whitehaven. All three of us have difficulties; I
have Asperger syndrome, my brother has M.E and my mother has Bipolar disorder.
This can be very tricky at times as all three of us could be affected at the same
time.
I am 35 years of age and have Asperger syndrome but I am a Chief Executive of
People First Independent Advocacy Cumbria. I have a very active social life; I play
pool once a week, have an interest in Horse Racing, I have shares in three Horses
and I am also engaged to Maria who I have been going out with for nearly six
years. I also work for the Whitehaven Rugby League Club in their snack bar.
My brother is called Ashley he is 30 years of age and suffers from M.E. (Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome) this means my brother has to go to bed in the afternoon. He has
three dogs and a parrot and is a big Manchester United fan. He likes cooking and
occasionally goes out with his mates when he is feeling ok to do so.
My mother is called Karen and is 54 years of age and is Bipolar which means that
from time to time she can be ill and can have mood swings and have depression.
This can go on for a day or a week or sometimes longer. When my Mother is ill she
says the safest place is in bed because she doesn’t want to see or speak to any
one, this can be hard for us and her boyfriend.
