Voices of the Voicless
‘Some Voices are ‘Harder to Hear’
‘Voices of the Voiceless’ project hosted a conference on Tuesday 12th April 2011.
The Voices of the Voiceless project is a three year project, at People First, running
throughout North and West Cumbria. The project is aimed at improving the lives of,
and giving a voice to, people living in residential services. These are often people
that have been given multiple labels such as; ‘non-verbal’, ‘profound and multiple
disabilities’ ‘challenging behaviour’ and ‘complex needs’.
The conference day was packed full of wonderful speakers including Rachael
Monk, Jan Hawkins and Dr Liz Dean who all spoke about different forms of
communication and connection with individuals who communicate alternatively.
We also had some amazing workshops which included Lindsay Graham with ‘An
Introduction to Makaton’, Carol Allen with ‘Communication Technology’ and Jan
Hawkins with ‘Making a Psychological Connection’.
We would like to thank everyone for attending from far and wide and for all the
support for the project. The conference focused on the main areas that the Voices
of the Voicless project is working on so providing everyone with a lot of depth
and insight.
It was a great day.
Thank you all again and we look forward to seeing you at the next one.
