At People First, when we talk about people with learning difficulties, we mean
“people labelled as having a learning difficulty”.
We think it is not good to ‘label’ people, marking them out as different to other
people. We are not different
we’re just the same as
everyone else.
We have thoughts and feelings, dream, hopes and
aspirations.
We have a future, a past and we have a now…
We think that people with learning diffculties should be
included in every step of any process which is going to
effect their lives.
People First believe that people with the label of learning
difficulties should not have to change to fit in with society.
At People First we do not think in terms of medical labels
like “Autism” or “Down’s Syndrome”.
We don’t look at what doctors say is “wrong with us”.
We believe in the ’social model’ of disability which
says that society should change to support people better.
All people have different kinds of support needs
and not everyone needs support all the time.
At People First we make sure that the people who work
here get the support they need to do their jobs.
